Nestled in the wooded hills overlooking the seaside town of Abergele, Gwrych Castle is one of North Wales’ most iconic historic estates. Steeped in grandeur and mystery, this Gothic Revival masterpiece has captivated visitors for generations — and more recently, audiences around the world as the UK filming location of I’m a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! during the COVID-19 pandemic.
From its fascinating past to its role in modern television, Gwrych Castle is more than just a beautiful ruin — it's a gateway into history, legend, and even showbiz glamour.

A Castle with Character: Gothic Grandeur and Deep Roots
Originally constructed between 1812 and 1822 by Lloyd Hesketh Bamford-Hesketh, the castle was built as a tribute to his mother's ancestral line, the Lloyds of Gwrych. The architecture reflects the Romantic Gothic style, complete with battlements, towers, turrets, and sweeping views over the Irish Sea and the Clwydian Range.

Over the years, the estate evolved to encompass more than 240 acres of gardens, woodlands, and parkland. It served as a grand country home, a training site during World War II, and a refuge for Jewish children evacuated through the Kindertransport programme, making it a site of deep cultural and humanitarian importance.
By the 1990s, however, the castle had fallen into disrepair — until it was rescued by the Gwrych Castle Preservation Trust, which continues to restore and protect this extraordinary site for future generations.
A Star of the Small Screen: I’m A Celebrity... at Gwrych Castle
Gwrych Castle was thrust into the national spotlight in 2020 and 2021, when it became the temporary UK home of the hit ITV show I’m a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! Normally filmed in the Australian jungle, the show relocated to Gwrych Castle due to travel restrictions — and audiences loved the change of scene.
The eerie, enchanting surroundings gave the series a unique twist, blending the usual bugs and bush-tucker trials with dripping corridors, candle-lit rooms, and ancient stone walls. Fans of the show can now visit the actual filming locations, retracing the steps of celebrities like Vernon Kay, Giovanna Fletcher, Jordan North, and others who took on their challenges in this unforgettable setting.
