The Snowdon Mountain Railway operates a unique fleet of locomotives, each playing a vital role in transporting passengers up the steep gradients of Snowdon.

Steam Locomotives

Three coal-fired steam locomotives, built by the Swiss Locomotive & Manufacturing Co. of Winterthur, are currently in operation. Two of these date back to 1895 and 1896, showcasing over a century of engineering heritage. These locomotives feature inclined boilers to maintain water coverage over the firebox on steep inclines, ensuring safety and efficiency. Each steam engine pushes a single carriage up the mountain, with the carriage not physically coupled to the locomotive for safety reasons.

Diesel Locomotives

Between 1986 and 1992, four diesel locomotives were introduced to complement the steam fleet. Built by the Hunslet Engine Co. in Leeds, each is powered by a 320-horsepower, six-cylinder turbocharged Rolls Royce diesel engine. These modern engines provide reliable service, ensuring the railway operates smoothly throughout the season.

Rack and Pinion System

Given the steep gradients of the route, the railway employs the Abt rack and pinion system. A toothed rack rail runs between the standard rails, engaging with a cogwheel (pinion) on the locomotive. This system allows trains to safely ascend and descend slopes as steep as 1 in 5.5 (18%). Additionally, derailment protection devices are fitted to ensure maximum safety.
